Veterans Day 2015
The Commons at Neoga Elementary was filled with 104 Veterans and their guests. Breakfast was served, followed by a program in the gymnasium. Decorations around the school enhanced the celebration with patriotic displays and numerous projects completed by various students. Each year a theme is chosen for the day. Teachers and staff develop projects and decorations around that theme. The focus for this year was the Korean Conflict. Projects and art pieces from K-5 were featured throughout the school. This year, Mrs. Bridges’ American History class also participated by creating Veteran interview displays. Guests greatly enjoyed viewing all of the projects.
As always, the Honor Wall was present. Last year was the first transition to a permanent Honor Wall. This wooden display includes the names and branches of service of Veterans. Additions to the Honor Wall are always welcome. To make additions or corrections, email Mrs. Altman (jaltman@neogacusd3.net) and include first and last name, and service branch.
The Sigel American Legion Honor Guard presented the colors to begin the ceremony. The Sigel chapter has graciously provided this for the ceremony for the last several years. The National Anthem was performed by the High School Chorus, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by NES students. Mr. James then read the Veterans Day Proclamation. All NES students performed musical selections. Mrs. Jones’ 2nd Grade Class presented America’s White Table. The Jr.-Sr. High Chorus sang Soldier Boy, followed by the Military Medley performed by Eagle’s Wings. The colors were then retired by the Honor Guard. All guests and students made their way outside for the closing of the ceremony which consisted of a 21 gun salute by the Sigel American Legion, during which, Taps was played by NHS students Emily Hakman and Allison Kump.
NES students also collected needed items for the Danville VA Hospital. Mrs. Oakley, of the Strasburg Ladies Auxiliary post was thrilled with the amount our students collected. Thank you to all who made this day a success!
