A Smile A Day

By Lillian Leslie

Tommy Nickerson was an 18 year-old student from Wediko High School, who was suffering from a mental issue the whole year before committing suicide. He was awarded with “Most Defensive” on his basketball team and was a volunteer for a place called Fast Friends, which was for an adoption agency for retired greyhounds. He was an incredible student in the year before his unfortunate death. He was close to his family and made more friends by the day. We must learn from the terrible tragedy of Tommy Nickerson’s death. We can start preventing things like this, even if it means offering a smile a day.

One way that we could focus on making sure things like this don’t happen again is to  make sure to watch what we say. Start thinking more about how you don’t truly know someone until they want you to. Don’t give up on getting people to open up to you that are close to you; it may hurt knowing it will make them mad, but it’ll help them in the long run

Another way of preventing these tragedies from happening is to be KIND! Be nice to everyone, and be the bigger person! It doesn’t matter if someone isn’t exactly like you; everyone is like someone else, and that fact needs to be accepted. Learn to communicate, and find not only one person, but multiple people to talk about these things. It only takes one person to make things feel okay then, but in the long run, it’ll help to have more opinions.

Please think about these things, it will help you if you ever go into the same situation as them one time or another. A smile a day could keep the hate away. This is all for now; I hope these ideas help a lot of people.
